โฆ Synopsis
Numerical solutions of the equations of motion are explored for the flow in the entrance region of a falling liquid lihn. Application of the von Mises transformation to the Prandtl boundary layer equations yields a solution for the free surface velocity profile which is in excellent agreement with experimental data for Reynolds numbers in the range of 145-304. A method of matching solutions of elliptic and parabolic equations was employed to investigate the validity of one of the boundary layer assumptions, and the importance of accurately locating the position of the free surface was determined. Comparisons are also made with previous theoretical treatments of this problem.
