✦ Synopsis

The helix-coil transition temperature Tc of poly(Y-benzy1 bglutamate) in binary solvent mixtures of dichloroacetic acid and l,bdichlorobutane, 1-chlorooctane, or 1chlorododecane have been measured. A treatment is presented with which the transition enthalpy can be calculated from the observed dependence of T, on solvent composition.

Results are compared with previously obtained calorimetric data. The nnderlying assumpt.ions of the calculation are discussed.

By combining the heat of dilution of a poly (y-benzyl L-glutamate)-dichloroacetic acid-1,2-dichloroethane solution with the corresponding heat of mixing of two solvents, the integrated heat of the coil-helix transition of poly(y-benzyl L-glutamate) in the solution was estimated to be about 750 cal/m

## Abstract The helix–coil transition in poly(γ‐benzyl L‐glutamate‐__co__‐γ‐methyl L‐glutamate) copolypeptides was studied experimentally in nonaqueous solvents and the results compared with theory. In this paper two points are considered: the methods of evaluating the helical content 8 and the calculation of the parameters of the transition from experimental data and its interpretation. The parameter AH obtained is in good agreement with the calorimetric one and v is found to be independent of
