✦ Synopsis

The feasibility of multiphoton exitaton (MPE) and dissociation (hiPD) of trktomic molecules is the subject of current e~perimenral controversy_ The most probable path approximation (MPPA) makes use of artificial intelligence algorithms to select the most important excitation paths within the semiclassical Floquet matrix, allowing efticient and accurate cakulation of non-linear SIPE quantum dynamics to very high order. An zb initio study of SOa using the MPPA indicates thnt collisionless MPD xxill not be achieved at laser field strengths under 20 GW/cm'. The possibility of hlPD at higher laser intensities is currently under imestigation.

We investigated the infrared multiphoton excitation of SO2 in bulk samples and in a supersonic jet with the 9R1,22), 9R(32), and 9P( 32) CO\*-laser lines.
