✦ Synopsis
The internal energy of the excited BaO formed in the reaction between Ba(6s5d 'D2) and an OZ molecule has been studied in a crossed beam apparatus as a function of the collision energy. It is found to be statistically distributed even at a collision energy as high as 0.58 eV. By comparison with the reaction of ground state Ba, this is interpreted by a long-lived complex orbiting in a deep Ba02 well. This is the first observation of direct emission of triplet molecules BaO ('Z+) as the result of a reaction of a Ba atom with an oxidizer in the gas phase.
