Cancer chemoprevention is defined as intervention by chemical agents prior to invasion to inhibit or slow the carcinogenic process. Using surrogate endpoint biomarkers in chemoprevention studies may reduce the size, length and cost of clinical prospective randomized trials in high-risk populations.
