β¦ Synopsis
Abstraet--TafΒ’l parameters and H-T separation factors have been determined on Pt, Rh, W, Ni, Cu, Cd, Hg and Pb in acid solutions and on Pt, W, Ni and Pb in alkaline solutions at a current density of 10 -s A/on z. The ST values in acid solution fall into three groups: 6-7 on Hg, Pb, W; 9-11 on Pt, Rh and Cd; 16-18 on Cu and Ni. In alkaline solutions, Ni, W and Ph gave S~ values of 4-7, and Pt, 15-16. Tafel slopes greater than 2RT/F V are due either to adsorption of organic impurities or to the presence of conducting films. The mechanisms indicated from separation factors are slow recombination on Pt and Rh in acid solution, slow electrochemical desorption on Cu and Ni in acid solution, and Pt in alkaline solution, slow-discharge-fast-recombination on Ni and W in alkaline solution, linked-discharge-electrochemical desorption on Hg, Pb (discharge rate-determining) and Cd (electrochemical desorption rate-determining).
