โฆ Synopsis
Electrospray ionization has been used for the mass spectrometric study of N-oxidation products of clenbuterol, i.e. its hydroxylamine, nitro and nitroso analogues. The behaviour of these compounds towards in-source collisional activation has been investigated. Although these products follow the same general dissociation pathways, some noticeable differences appear in their electrospray in-source collisional activation mass spectra. Indeed, the nitro and nitroso derivatives fragment via specific additional pathways, owing to their ability to eliminate NO
. or NO 2 . radical species. In order to highlight some structural features such as the hydroxylation site, H/D solution exchange experiments have been performed which allowed also the elucidation of some fragmentation mechanisms.
