The 3 A 2 (nπ \* ) → 1 A 1 X (T 1 → S 0 ) phosphorescence excitation spectrum of jet-cooled xanthione was investigated in the region 14 920-17 600 cm -1 . The structure observed is shown to be due to the T 1 ← S 0 absorption and an assignment in terms of the vibronic structure of that band is propos

✦ Synopsis
Laser fluorescence excitation spectra and dispersed fluorescence spectra of jet-cooled 3-bromotropolone and its OD derivative have been measured in the &-So region to investigate the intramolecular hydrogen bond. Only one electronic origin band has been detected, although two tautomeric forms are possible for 3.bromotropolone. This suggests that one tautomeric form is energetically much more stable than the other form.
