✦ Synopsis

We predict that in strongly localized miued-valence systems "electronic" Raman scattering corresponding to transitions between the coupled potential surfaces can be comparable to or stronger than vibrational resonance Raman scattering. The characteristics of the two patterns depend sensitively on the parameters describing the system and the exciting frequency.

* Strictly, transitions cannot be pictured as occurring between

the surfaces since the nuclear motion in each vibronic state occurs on both surfaces because of the dynamic coupling. We retain the simpIe pictorial Ianguagc for convenience.

Possible trapped valence states in trimeric mixed-valence clusters are considered. The adiabatic potential in the space of a doubly-degenerate e vibration is calculated. Conditions under which minima with different electron distributions exist are determined. The coexistence of localized and delocal
