✦ Synopsis
Mass selected C 2 S À ions have been co-deposited with neon to grow a matrix at 6 K. The A 2 R þ X 2 P and B 2 P X 2 P electronic absorption spectra of the linear CCS À anion have been identified with origin band at 10 606 and 22 273 cm À1 , respectively. After exposure to UV radiation a new electronic transition ðE 3 R À X 3 R À Þ of CCS is observed (origin band at 30 563 cm À1 ) in addition to its known A 3 P X 3 R À band system. Ab initio calculations provide support for the symmetry assignment of the upper electronic states of CCS À , CCS and of the vibrational structure in the spectra.
