β¦ Synopsis
Rece~vcd 22 l-ebruary 1977 Spectrophotometric pulse radiolysis experiments with tic-and trans-stilhene (Sc and St) III 2-propmol show that both isomers react with the solvatcd clcctron with a rate constant of 4.5 X 10' W'Z'. ' l-he abcorption spectra of :hc two anion radicals have mkrna at 496 and 486 nm, rcspcctivcly. The absorb.mces at 400 -550 run dluppcar exponentrally corrcspondmg to d pseudo first order protonation of the anion radrclls. The rate constants for the protonatlon of the cis isomer is 6 4 X 10' and of the trans isomer 0.7 X 10 5 -' In mixtures of cis-and trans-stllbenc the electron transfer S' f St-& s . has a forward rate constant of 9 X IO' hl-' f' while the back reactton h.hc J r&c constant of 2.15 X IO7 AI-s lt-I_ Sc+SF An quilibrmm constant K ~4.2 1s calculated. * Tlrc rr*scordx clcscrihcd hcrcin was supported by tile Division
