✦ Synopsis

Electron spin-lattice and cross relaxation processes in X-ray and electron irradiated single crystals of malonic acid have been invest&ted over the temperature range 1.1" to 300Β°K as a function of mdiation dosage and as a function of thermal aging. The recovery of the longitudinal magnetization foliowing puked saturation is due to cross reiaxation among the radicals R2cX, RdX2, and RC?XzC=O (where R = COUH or COOD and X = H or D) and to the characteristic spin-lattice relaxation rates of these radicals. The spin-lattice relaxation times in thew radicals appear to be determined by phonon modu~tion of the spin-orbit coupling rather than of the hyperfinc interaction.

In the presence of an off-resonance radiofrequency field, recovery of longitudinal magnetization to a steady state is not purely monoexponential. Under reasonable conditions with zero initial magnetization, recovery is nearly exponential and an effective relaxation rate constant R(1eff) = 1/T(1eff)
