Abstract

The ground state of Gd^3+^ ions substituting for Y^3+^ in YAl~3~(BO~3~)~4~ single crystal has been studied by EPR method. Spin Hamiltonian parameters and their signs for Gd^3+^ ion in trigonal symmetry (g~z~ = 1.9893 ± 0.0002, g~x~ = g~y~ = 1.9860 ± 0.0002; $b_2^0 $ = 386.15 ± 0.11; $b_4^0 $ =β€‰βˆ’12.65 ± 0.07; $b_6^0 $ = 0.35 ± 0.10) were determined. Structural phase transition manifested as a discontinuous change of splitting of spectrum was observed near 157 K.
