Anti correlation of highest bonding with lowest antibonding r-orbitals of the benzene -TCNE complex in cofacial isomers of C2v symmetry leads to ground state stabilisation associated with EDA complex behaviour in each case. Electron-donor-acceptor systems are classified according to the sequence of events leading to the production of excited donor-acceptor complexes.
