✦ Synopsis

Ah&act-The cathodic V log i curves for On reduction on oxide-free Pt electrodes were determined in oxygen-saturated purhied acid (HClO,, pH l-3) and alkaline (NaOH, pH 13) solutions. It was found that aV/aiogi = -2.3RTlF, .ayalOgp,, = -23RTlF

and W/a pH = -100 mV. Coverage of electrodes by oxy gamammg spectes was determined by superimposing a constant cathodic current over the wor g electrode. Intenmdrate values of coverages were found to be nearly linearly dependent on the e&c&ode potential in the Tafel region.

-The kinetrcs and mechanism of 0. reduction on oxide-free Pt electrode are different from that reported for the oxld~vered electrod:. Reaction mechanisms are discussed in terms of Langmuir and Temkin adsorption isotherms. It is suggested that under Temkin conditions the rate&termining step in the over-all four-electron process is the tlrst electron transfer. The electrochemical reduction of dissolved oxygen at pre-oxidized and pre~reduced metal electrodes has been studied using the galvanostatic and chronopotentiometric methods. Oxygen reduction at pre-oxidized electrodes occurs by a pH-dependent mechanism that gives water as the reduction product. With

It is not yet possible to determine in detail the precise micro-structure of porous gas electrodes. It has therefore become customary to analyse actual electrode polarization curve in terms of an electrode model. The degree of cotidence in such analyses is lessened by the fact that certain parameter

The kinetics and mechanism of the reaction of chemisorbed oxide (P1-0) layer (in a smooth Pt electrode with H 2 dissolved in 1 M H,S0 4 solution were investigated under the open circuit condition. It was found that a monolaver of Pt-0 no the electrode surface is reduced first at a slow rate which i
