Electrochemical reduction ofcyclic and acyclic derivatives of 2,3-butanediol lo C,-hydrocarbons was examined. Among the derivatives, the cyclic sulphate was directly reduced to 2-butene; thediacatatc and dimethanesulphonatc also gave 2-butene but by indirect reduction with electrogenerated amalgam.

Comparative studies of the electrochemical reduction of 2-(o-nitrophenylthio)-acetic acid and its methyl ester in aqueous media of different acidity show that reduction of the ester in an ammoniacal buffer is the best adapted for ekctrosynthesis of 4-hydroxy-2H-1,4-benzothiazin-3(4H)-one.
