✦ Synopsis
Electrocatalytic oxidation of pentaerythrite and tris-(hydroxy-methyl)-methylamine at a platinized platinum electrode was studied by means of potentiostatic polarization measurements. Despite the great number of -CH,OH groups present in Ihe compounds studied low reaction rates were found. Adsorption of Cl-ions and H,FO, was studied by a radiotracer method in the presence of the organic species in order to gain some information about the adsorption and chemisorption processes involved in the overall oxidation reaction. It follows from the experimental results that the low oxidation rate cannot be explained by the occurrence of a very strong chemisorption inhibiting the oxidation process. Presumably the strength of C-H bonds and steric factors play a significant role in the reactivity.
