ION 017 COPPER AND TIN GROUP METALS
bY MAJUP.~U~R et NZ.',~*~, in their previous communications, have shown that the cations in a binary, ternary or quaternary misturc can be effectively separated by Durrum's technique, using some common clcctrolytcs, which also function as complex-forming agents. Tints they have been able to separate from each other ions of the platinum metals including gold and some members of the sulphide group.
This paper records the ionic movcmynts of the cations of the copper group (Hg+2, Ph+a, Bif", CU+~, Cd+2) and tin group (As +3, Sb+a, Sn+") and the migration sequences of the ions of the copper group when present in a three-, four-or five-component mixture, and those of the tin group in a binary mixture. All the ions of the copper group are separated from a five-component mixture with a clccinormal solution of potassium chloride as the electrolyte at a working voltage of rgc) V for 5 hours.
It may be mentioned that LEDEIZER AND W.ud report the_separation of the members of the copper group with hydrochloric acid as the electrolyte. We find, however, that with the said electrolyte, Cd and Pb form slightly overlapping ssones and while ammonium or sodium chloride behave like hydrochloric acid, potassium chloride acts ~fferentIy and is better suited for the separation of ions of the copper group.
