โฆ Synopsis
In the reaction ~2eSn(12C, 4n)XSยฐBa a highly excited isomeric state with a half-life of 8.8 4-0.2 ms was observed. The assignment to XSยฐBa follows from the excitation functions and from the good agreement of the ~,-lines 360 4-5 keV, 555-4-5 keV and 690i5 keV observed in the delayed spectrum with the well-known first three transitions in the rotational band of X3ยฐBa. A further y-line of 870 5:5 keV observed in this experiment might be interpreted as a K-forbidden isomeric transition leading to the 6 + level of the rotational band. However, another possibility, that the isomeric transition has an energy < 25 keV and was therefore not detected, cannot be excluded. In this case the 870 keV transition would be the fourth member of the rotational band. Several arguments concerning spin and parity of the isomeric state are reviewed. The most probable assignment seems to be J" = 8-.
