β¦ Synopsis
The results of four Swiss field studies of the relation between noise and annoyance in housing areas are presented and compared with those of recent studies elsewhere. In all these studies the degree of annoyance is taken to be the percentage of people "highly annoyed", and the ratio (noise level)/(% "highly annoyed") is found to be a non-linear function. In the Swiss studies the reasons for this non-linearity have been investigated by analysis of the effects of particular types of annoyance, such as disturbance of rest, of sleep or of communication.

This paper gives the measured values of the sound pressure level (Llo) resulting from traffic noise measurements over periods of 1 h and 18 h. These measurements were done daily over long and difficult periods, and at different periods and at different locations, in the greater Amman (Jordan) area.
