Noradrenergic mechanisms have been postulated to account for the anticonvulsant and psychotropic effects of carbamazepine. In order to assess this possibility in man, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was obtained from affectively ill patients before and during treatment with carbamazepine (average duration
