✦ Synopsis


THIS paper deals wailth the results of an extended series of experiments carried out at the Bureau of Standards during the past two yea,rs. The investigations consisted of three parts, as follows : ( I ) Laboratory investigations relatiag to the nature and cause of the phenomena produced by the passage o'f electric current through concrete ; (2) investigations in the field with a view of establishing the probable extent of the danger in practice, and the circumstances under which the trouble is mIost likely to occur; (3) a study of the various possible means of mitigating trouble from thi's source lea,ding to specific recommenda,tions. The experiments were for the most part carried o'ut on cylindrical specimens 6 inches in diameter and 8 inches high with an electrode, usually of iron or other metal, imbmedded in the centre, serving as either an anode or cathode in different cases. These specimens were immersed in water in jars surrounded by a sheelt-iron electrode, which sen-et1 as the other termi'nal. ANODE EFFECTS.
