✦ Synopsis

Seven chronic schizophrenic patients, stable for over 12 months on maintenance fluphenazine decanoate, were administered 40 g of alcohol orally soon after their regular injection. Blood samples for estimation of serum neuroleptic and prolactin levels were collected at various intervals over a 12 h period. The procedure was repeated at their next regular injection but without alcohol. It was found that alcohol ingestion produced a significant drop in both serum neuroleptic and prolactin levels which persisted during the study period.

Serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of fluphenazine (FPZ) were measured during nine weeks of FPZ medication in 28 patients with acute symptoms of schizophrenia. A significant correlation was found between the serum and CSF FPZ values (r = 0.70, p < 0-001) throughout the entire study.
