Systemic and focal cerebral acidosis is considered deleterious to cell metabolism and neuronal recovery. We investigated the immediate effect of tris-(hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane (THAM), an alkalizing agent, on focal cerebral ischemia produced by occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery (MCA) in
