✦ Synopsis

The polymerization of styrene at 60Β°C initiated by 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) was studied in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) in the presence of tris-(bathophenanthroline)iron(III) complex, [Fe(bathophed3I3+. The complex was prepared in situ by mixing hexakis(N,N-dimethylformamide)iron(III) perchlorate with bathophenanthroline (systematic IUPAC nomenclature: 4,7-diphenyI-l,lO-phenanthroline) in the molar ratio of 1 : 3. The equilibrium constant for [Fe(DMF)6]3' + 3bathophen + [Fe(bath~phen)~]~+ + 6DMF was 3.12 X lo3 L3 m ~l -~.

The transfer constant for bathophenanthroline was found to be 0.38 & 0.01 for the styrene/DMF system at 60Β°C. Mean velocity constant at 60Β°C for interaction of polystyryl radical with [Fe(bathophen)J3+ was 3.73 X lo4 L mol-' s-'. 0 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Emulsion and microemulsion polymerization of styrene were initiated with a gamma ray to study the effect of dose rate on polymerization. In both systems, there is an apparent plateau of polymerization rate in the curve of reaction rate vs. conversion. It was shown that emulsion polymerization confor

The batch emulsion polymerization of styrene was studied as a function of the initial monomer charge. The emulsifier (sodium lauryl sulfate) concentration was fixed at a level in excess of its critical micelle concentration (cmc). The mechanism of the polymerization was examined through data obtaine
