β¦ Synopsis
Mean droplet diameter of the dispersed phase in pulsed plate extraction columns was measured for binary and ternary systems. A change in the droplet size in the presence of solute, dependent on such factors as the direction of mass transfer, droplet size in the binary system, ratio of diffusion coefficients, viscosity of the continuous phase, interfacial tension and driving force for extraction was observed. Two new empirical correlations of mean droplet sizes in mass transfer conditions are proposed. These correlations have been successfully applied to other extraction columns.

A device which can be used to measure the volume fraction and the average drop size of the dispersed phase in a liquid-liquid system is described. Its principle is based on the difference between the velocities of transmission of acoustic waves in the two liquids. Volume fraction is found from the s
## Abstract Experimental studies have been performed to assess the effect of drop charge on turbulent drop coalescence. Although it is well known that surface charge can affect coalescence rates of Brownian particles in a quiescent medium, no studies have been found in the literature which explicit
A procedure involving high speed tine photography and novel optical probes has been used to study droplet interaction phenomena in liquid-liquid dispersions. Coalescence and breakup events were observed and the rate of coalescence was measured at various positions in a stirred tank for dispersions o
