β¦ Synopsis
The effect of the addition of each tocopherol and tocotrienol on the physicochemical property of the iiposomal membrane was studied and discussed in relation to their antioxidative activities. The addition of tocopherol and tocotrienol decreased the fluorescence intensity of 3,Y-dipropyl thiocarbocyanine iodide and increased the fluorescence polarization of 1,6-diphenyl-l,3,5-hexatriene added to the dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) liposomes. These results suggested that the addition of the antioxidant induced the conformational change of the membrane to give rise to the change in the membrane potential and also induced the decrease in the membrane fluidity of DOPC liposomes. The difference in the change in the physicochemical property of the membrane seemed to be related to the difference in the antioxidative activity between tocopheroi and tocotrienol. It was estimated, however, that the partitioned amount of the antioxidant was not the primary factor of the changes in the membranous physicochemical property.
