✦ Synopsis

The ignition delay for methane-air mixtures is found to be reduced by the addition of nitrogen dioxide. Reflected shock wave experiments indicate that a reduction of 1/2 -1/3 in ignition delay can be realized when 1-2% NO2 is added to stoichiometric mixtures at a temperature range of 1300-1800Β°K and pressures around 14 atms.

The minimum spark ignition energy in methane-air mixtures was measured for pressures between 0.1 and 0.4 arm and methane concentrations near the lean ignition limits. A chemical kinetic model for determining the mole fractions of stable and intermediate species for CH /NO /O #ames is developed. The model involves 30 di!erent species in 101 chemical elementary reactions. The mole fractions of the species are plotted as a function of the distance from the surface o
