✦ Synopsis
Spontaneous explosion o/ rich mixtures o/methane and a:r has been studied in the pressure range o] 58 to llO atmospheres and at temperatures down to JSO°C. The activation energies /or both the ignition delay and the rate o/slow reaction preceding explosion lay in the range 39 to 45 hcal/mole. The air content o! the mixture had only a small effect on the rate o] slow reaction and the ignition delay. The order with respect to pressure was 1.4 ]or the reciprocal ignition delay. Products detected during the ignition delay included hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methanol and ]ormaldeY~yde, together with minute traces ol ethane and ethylene. Carbon monoxide did not appear until the end of the ignition delay. The general ]eatures o] the reaction preceding explosion appear to be similar to those o/the slow oxidation at low pressure.
