✦ Synopsis


The electrochemical behavior of the ghssy carbon electrode (GCE) in aqueous 1.0-20.OM H F solutions and in mixed solvents containing 15.0 M H F (25 vol.%) was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry. and surface microscopic analysis. The GCE shows three surface redox peaks in aqueous H F solutions which become distinct at higher H F concentrations. Fresh surface oxidation and slight surface roughening occurs above 1.6 V. The background current increases significantly due to strong anodic polarisation in H F solutions. However, the electrode activity as meaisured by the response of the ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox system remains unaltered. In mixed solvent systems, the surface redox currents and fresh surface oxidation decrease significantly. The oxygen evolution occurs at less positive potentials. Thus the electrochemical activity in such systems is much better.
