โœฆ Synopsis

The ability of neutrophil leukocytes to extravasate into the peritoneal cavity in response to a n intraperitoneal injection of bacterial endotoxin was studied i n mice. The normal response of a marked accumulation of intrapcritoneal neutrophils was comrletely abolished by halothane anesthesia. It was further shown that such abolition depended uFon the presence of halothane during the time the extravasation would normally be occurring. The evidence points toward a n effect on either the leukocyte or the vessel rather than a non-specific "stress" effect. It is suggested that the effect is on the neutrophil, rendcring it less deformable and, hence, less able to undergo trans-vascular diapedesis.

Objectives: Candida albicans is known to produce gliotoxin, which has several prominent biological effects, including immunosuppression. Interference with host defenses may arise from the effects of this toxin on leukocyte structure and function. Methods: Flow cytometric analysis revealed that poly

Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) from human neonates respond less efficiently to chemotactic factor stimulation than do PMNs from adults. The biologic mechanisms underlying this developmental process are poorly understood. In previous studies, we have found that pentoxifylline, an agent reported
