β¦ Synopsis
The manuscripts contained in this special issue represent a set of papers that were presented at the 5th Silicon Nanoelectronics Workshop, June 11-12, 2000, in Honolulu. Sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, this workshop is a satellite to the VLSI Symposium held each June, with a venue alternating between Kyoto, Japan, and Honolulu, Hawaii. More than 100 researchers from around the world gathered at the Hilton Hawaiian Village to discuss key advances in this important aspect of future microelectronics. It is well recognized today, through publications such as the Semiconductor Industries Association's 'roadmap', that critical lengths in MOSFETs are rapidly approaching the nanometer scale. As a result, conferences such as this one have become an important place to discuss the issues attendant on reaching such size scales.
As guest editor of this special issue, I would like to thank all those whose hard work led to a successful meeting. In particular, Ms Melissa Widerkehr provided wonderful support in handling the registration and local arrangements.
