โœฆ Synopsis

Starting today, we are introducing a new editorial policy regarding Surface Science Letters. In the past, Surface Science has had no official requirements for Letters that differ from those for regular manuscripts, except for the short length requirement. The new policy will require that Letters also be ''sufficiently important that they warrant priority publication.'' This new policy actually matches the present expectations of many if not most of our authors, referees and readers. The most obvious result will be a slightly different set of questions in the checkboxes for referees, one of which addresses this new official requirement. In order to verify more accurately that Letters meet this new requirement, in the future we will normally use two referees instead of one for Letters. We will continue to take steps that allow us to reach faster editorial decisions on Letters submissions, on average. For this reason, submissions of Letters will be handled by all the regional editors, and no longer only by the chief editor.
