✦ Synopsis

In the middle of 1992 I became the Editor-in-Chief of Mathematische Nachrichten; at the same time the Editorial Office changed from the Karl-Weierstraß-Institute for Mathematics to the University of Regensburg. The volume 160 was the first which was published under my editorship and appeared in January 1993. At that time Mathematische Nachrichten were publishing 5 volumes per year, each with 345 pages, altogether 1725 pages, but the journal was facing serious difficulties because of lack of appropriate manuscripts. Therefore Akademie Verlag, the former publishing company of Mathemaische Nachrichten, was afraid of being forced to reduce the scope of the journal to 4 or even 3 volumes per year. Indeed, I first hesitated to take over the editorship because of an overlap with my presidency of the Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, GAMM, from 1993 to 1995 and my participation in the organization of the 3rd International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics, ICIAM 95, held in Hamburg in 1995. Under these conditions the start of my editorship was not unproblematic, but many mathematicians from nearly all over the world helped me in various ways, e.g. by becoming Co-Editors or joining the Advisory Board of Mathematische Nachrichten, by submitting their manuscripts suitable for publication, by taking over the duty of refereeing the submitted papers, or by supporting me with the editorial work. Since that time the development of Mathematische Nachrichten is impressing. The quality and the number of submissions is steadily increasing since 1993. The Editorial Office

The Bethe strip of width m is the cartesian product B × {1, . . . , m}, where B is the Bethe lattice (Cayley tree). We prove that Anderson models on the Bethe strip have "extended states" for small disorder. More precisely, we consider Anderson-like Hamiltonians H λ = 1 2 Δ ⊗ 1 + 1 ⊗ A + λV on a Bet

Generalization of the B \* -algebra (C 0 (X), ∞ ) We give a generalization of the Stone-Weierstrass property for subalgebras of C(X), with X a completely regular Hausdorff space. In particular, we study in this paper some subalgebras of C 0 (X), with X a locally compact Hausdorff space, provided wi
