✦ Synopsis

On August, 4, 2010 Prof. Dr. DIETRICH UHLMANN celebrated his 80 th birthday. We are very thankful that DIETRICH UHLMANN still serves on the Advisory Board of this journal. He has worked in that position over 40 years … since 1969. In 1972 he became editor and, from 1983 to 1993, he was the Editor-in-Chief. In addition to being responsible over a long time span, DIETRICH UHLMANN had exceptional oversight and was the most influential person concerning the policy of this journal during its second period (see UHLMANN and WALZ, 2008). Beyond his duties to the journal DIETRICH UHLMANN was -and still is -a leading scientist and a gifted teacher. He worked successfully on the interface between basic and applied research, and he brought many complex aspects of hydrobiology into ecological engineering. His publication activity is still ongoing and a good overview, about the fields of his research, was given on the occasion of his 65 th birthday in a special issue of this Journal (IRH 1995, Vol. 80, Issue 4). We wish him good health and look forward to his continued advice in the future.

## Preface Prof. Dr. GERNOT BRETSCHKO passed away on March 28, 2002. As many of us know, GER-NOT would not have wanted extravagant praise of his scientific career and many merits in this obituary because he was a very modest man. Thus, we will give just a few details. He studied zoology and physi

In 2008 we celebrated the centenary of this journal which was established in 1908. This special issue was a great success and here we t

Floodplains belong to the most complex and species rich ecological systems in Europe. Man has manipulated and partly destroyed these habitats by: substantial impact upon the hydrological regime of rivers, structural alterations (particularly due to embankments which reduce flood retention areas) and
