## Abstract Methods of calculating the eddy diffusivity κ are discussed. It is shown that methods which assume that κ can be regarded as independent of the height, even through a shallow layer, lead to erroneous results: in consequence the frequent use in the literature of the approximate equation

Fifty expFcrimentn1 points are presented for the concentration dependence of the binary diffusion coefficient, CD 12, of the system helium-agon at 300°K and 1 atm pressure. These-values of 9 I2 are best represented by a parabola in the mole fraction of argon, x2.
