In the crystal structure of the title compound, C 23 H 19 NO 2 , the molecular backbone is nearly planar, with a dihedral angle of 11.58 (12) between the planes of the carbazole and benzene groups.

The title compound, C 18 H 18 O 5 , was prepared by the condensation of 2-hydroxyacetophenone with 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde. The trimethoxyphenyl and hydroxyphenyl rings of the chalcone system are approximately coplanar.
