We propose a new electroabsorption modulator EAM structure where the linearity is impro¨ed by means of appropriately changing the absorption profile along the de¨ice length. As a practical implementation, a selecti¨e-area-grown MQW᎐EAM was in¨estigated. Compared with a con¨entional EAM, the linearit

✦ Synopsis
The generation of optical᎐microwa¨e mixing by FMrIM con¨ersion is in¨estigated by using three types of interferometers. The performances obtained with the different components are compared in terms of stability, frequency bandwidth, and con¨ersion loss. Experimental results are finally reported with an UMZ integrated on a glass substrate, which is a low-cost de¨ice of easy fabrication.

## Abstract The performance of a pre‐amplified cross‐phase modulation (XPM) wavelength converter has been theoretically investigated. We showed that the pre‐amplifier enhances the input optical power dynamic range by 3 dB. The additional 4‐dB improvement of the power penalty in wavelength conversio
