✦ Synopsis

A mathematical model is developed that represents a first approximation of the dynamics of the coal char combustion. The model determines a range of particle sizes and gas temperatures where oscillation can occur and propagating spherical waves surround the particle. It is also possible to compute the frequency and amplitude of the oscillations and the wavelength and the velocity of the propagating spherical waves around the particle. However, the role of the oxygen concentration is unclear. The oscillatory range of particle sizes and gas temperatures and the frequencies, amplitudes, and wavelengths determined from the model are tested against the small amount of published experimental data and the laser-pulse holography investigations of Rem6nyi, Horvhth, and V6r6s.

To simulate combustion behaviour in a pilot-scale combustor, a laboratory-scale agitated combustor has been developed which allows burnout and combustion rates for large coal particles to be measured. Particle sizes up to 25 mm can be studied, typical of those used in fixed-bed retorts. Char burnout
