Measurements of the capacity of the a.c. impedance of a smooth platinum dectrode were carried out with 300 c/s at 30Β°C in 1 N HC104 with different amounts of methanol as a function of potential in the potential range between hydrogen and oxygen evolution. Polarography with superimposed a.c. voltage was used. The technique is described. The capacity/potential curves allow qualitative conclusions on the methanol adsorption in the hydrogen region, the double layer region, and the region of oxygen adsorption. The conclusions are confirmed by comparison with the results of direct measurements of the methanol coverage. The methanol coverage was computed with the aid of two approximate equations from the double layer capacity and compared with the respective values of the direct determination in the double layer region. The agreement appears satisfactory at higher coverage while the deviations become greater at medium and low coverage.
Znsammenfassung--Messungen der Kapazit/it der Wechselstromimpedanz einer glatten Platinelektrode wurden mit 300 Hz bci 30Β°C in 1 N HC10~ mit verschiedenen Zus~itzen yon Methanol als eine Funktion des Elektrodenpotentials ira Bereich zwischen Wasserstoff-und Sauerstoffentwicldung durchgefiihrt. Polarographie mit tiberlagertem Wechselstrom wurde angewendet. Die Methode wird beschrieben. Die Kapazit~it/Potential-Kurven erlauben qualitative Folgerungen tiber die Methanoladsorption ira Wasserstoffgebiet, ira Doppelschichtgebiet und im Bereich der Sanerstoffadsorption. Die Folgerungen werden dutch Vergleich mit den Ergebnissen direkter Messungen der Methanolbelegung best/itigt. Die Methanolbelegung wurde wit Hilfe zweier N/iherungsbeziehungen yon der Doppelschichtkapazitiit berechnet und mit den Werten der direkten Bestimmung verglichen. Die Obereinstimmung erscheint zufriedenstellend bei gr6sserer Belegung, w/ihrend die Abweichungen bei mittlerer und kleiner Belegung gr6sser werden.
