โœฆ Synopsis

Divalproex is now commonly used to treat bipolar disorder in older patients. However, it has yet to be systematically studied in this population. This report describes six older bipolar patients treated with divalproex. Of the six, ยฎve showed some improvement with divalproex alone or in combination with other agents. Clearly, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study is an important next step to assess this promising medication.

Objective: To conduct a pilot study on the safety and tolerability of a dosage strategy for divalproex sodium beginning with 30 mg/kg/day. It is hypothesized that loading at this level will reach therapeutic levels of valproate more quickly, which in turn will decrease the latency of the therapeutic
