Dissolution
governed by surface free convection, the technologically most important kinds of which are upward drilling and flux-line corrosion, occurs in the meniscus of the solvent under conditions where the surface tension of the solvent increases with the concentration of the dissolved substance and this change is relatively large in proportion to the increase of density. By assuming a velocity distribution for steady state Bow driven by a surface tension gradient, an equation is derived which relates velocity of dissolution of the solid in the meniscus region to the properties of the system. This equation includes a parameter (B) which is a function of concentration and velocity. It is shown theoretically that the value of B should be 0.2-0.4; experimental data yield values in the range 0.3-0.4. The convection in the meniscus is a laminar one.
