โœฆ Synopsis

A theory of the dissociation of polyatomic molcculcs by intense infrared kscr radiation is prescntcd. It is suggested that vibrational heating of the whole molecule occurs by intramolecular vIbrationa coupling to a given infrared active mode which is in near-rcsomince with the applied field. A high-level of excitation of the active mode is not necessary for dissociation to occur.

Both the primary and resulting yields of the multiphoton dlssonabon (MPD) of (CF&CI upon CO&scr irradiation are found to depend strongly on the CO+ser radiation frequency. The frequency dependence of the dissociation rate of the 0~04 molecule by a strong infrared resonant field is shown to have a rich structure due to multiple photon absorption resonances. This permits laser isotope separation with small isotope shift. No dissociation was observed in the case of excit

The production of molecular and atomic ions has been measured for CO. N2 and O2 with 1064 and 532 nm 40 ps pulses in the 1012-10\*4 W cm" \_ rntensity range. The grazing incidence surface-induced dissociation (GI-SID) of n-hexadecylpyridinium and verapamil ions generated by fission fragment desorption was studied. These molecules show the effect of enhanced surfaceinduced dissociation at grazing incidence as it was observed in former experiments with met
