Water from the 150 iz surface film 50 miles north of Puerto Rico at 19030 , N, 66o30 , W supported only a negligible microflora compared to that of adjacent stations. Bacteriostasis was indicated when a ten-fold dilution of the sample resulted in a ninety-fold increase in cultivable microorganisms.
