✦ Synopsis

Water from the 150 iz surface film 50 miles north of Puerto Rico at 19030 , N, 66o30 , W supported only a negligible microflora compared to that of adjacent stations. Bacteriostasis was indicated when a ten-fold dilution of the sample resulted in a ninety-fold increase in cultivable microorganisms. The surviving organisms, atypical pseudomonads, were biochemieally inactive in comparison to isolates from the other stations. Net phytoplankters at this station were similar in relative composition and abundance to those at the adjacent station.
