✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Ruthenium red (RR) is known to be an inhibitor that binds to Ca^2+^ sites. It releases Ca^2+^ and Cl^βˆ’^ together with the extrinsic polypeptide of 17 kDa associated with the oxygen evolving complex of photosystem II. In this work we used thermoluminescence to study S~2/3~Q~B~^βˆ’^ and S~2~Q~A~^βˆ’^ charge recombination. It is shown that RR produced a deeper inhibition of oxygen evolution compared with the effect of extrinsic polypeptide or Ca^2+^/Cl^βˆ’^ depletion. Even though Mn is not released, the Mn cluster is disorganized by RR and the S~1~ β†’ S~2~ transition is inhibited. Copyright Β© 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

## Abstract The site of action of nitrite on PS II was investigated by measuring the TL profile of nitrite‐treated spinach thylakoid membranes. Three bands were observed in control, which were identified as the Q band (7Β°C), the B band (24Β°C) and the C band (57Β°C). In the presence of 20 mmol/L nitr
