✦ Synopsis

Five discrete excitor& transitions were observed in quantum dots, i.e. quantum-sized Cd& as a function of particle size. The experimentally determined energy levels of the excitonic states were compared to eigenvalues calculated from products of two particle-in-a-box s or p orbitals.

Size-selective spectroscopic techniques and a tight-binding calculation with restricted configuration interaction are used to study the recombination and the relaxation of excitons in CdS quantum dots. The optical absorption spectrum is calculated and is found to be close to the experiments. The ana
