Determinations of the 'Pl,I-2P3,7 splitting in the ground (3~~) state of the argon ion derived from rlectronic spectra yield a range of values_ In particular the VUV measurement of Mimrhagen [ 151, 143 1.60 +-0.03, cm-1 ~ and the earlier measurement of Herzberg [16], 1431.41 cm-l, are both lower than that reported by Moore [ 17],1432.0 cm-r _ The present work was undertaken to determine this spacing directly by measuring the transition at 7 ,um in an analogous manner to the isoelectronic chlorine atom ]lS]. and as part of a programme for studying gaseous ions in a discharge-tube ion source_
