✦ Synopsis

Radiationless transitions of isolated molecules [Za] in the gaseous phase and more recently in condensed media have been treated by Bixon and by Jortner [1,2], as a deviation from the Born-Oppenheimer approximation [2b]. For tetracene [2], anthracene [3], and other molecules, it has also been considered [4] from the theoretical point of view. In all of the cases reported the existence of radiationless electronic vibrational relaxation is confirmed beyond doubt. Theoretical limits of the ultrafast relaxation of the interelectronic processes in dense media have been predicted [5], but no direct measurements have been made. During the last year an experimental upper limit for a "decay" in a dye was reported as 25 X lo-l2 set [S]. A method is reported hereby * Presented in part at the Symposium on "metastable species" at the ACS National meeting in San Francisco, California. 31 March -5 April 1968.
