✦ Synopsis

The direct absorption spectra of benzene in jets are measured in the wavelength region of the SZ and Ss system, using synchrotron radiation (SR) as a light source. Two broad absorption maxima are found at 208 and 185 nm and assigned, respectively, to the Ss and the Ss absorption system of benzene clusters. Large stability in the S2 and S3 states upon cluster formation, by at least 6 kcal/mol, is concluded from the observed red-shifts with respect to the monomer bands.
